What is a stroke?

A stroke is the sudden death of a portion of brain cells due to a lack of oxygen. A stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted. Also occurs when blood goes into spaces around the brain cells which happens when a blood vessel bursts. The brain cells die when there is no oxygen and nutrients to receive from the blood. Brain cells also die from the sudden bleed in or around the brain. A stroke is to be considered a medical emergency. Call 9-1-1 if you think you are having a stroke. Urgent care for a stroke could mean the difference of life or death. The earlier the treatment, the better the chance of having minimal brain damage. Stroke can cause paralysis, muscle weakness, speech or language difficulties, memory problems, visual problems, coma or even death.

  • Two Types of Stroke:
